New life Church History
During the late summer of 2014 Pastor Braxton was approached on different occasions by Sister Barbara Barr, Sister Annie Rollins and Sister Cynthia Griffin and among others to consider teaching a bible study at Pikeswood Park Apartments where they were residents.
The idea was kicked around for a few months or so, and after several requests Pastor Braxton approached the leasing office seeking a desirable day and time to conduct bible studies. After attempts were made, finally a day and time was found. On October 8, 2014, New Life Church conducted its first bible study. On that first service eleven persons attended. After setting some ground rules, our first lesson was taught concerning Prayer.
From that first lesson it has been a joy teaching and learning from one another. No subject and no question are off limits. From day one, Pastor Braxton stated that “if I don’t know the correct answer to any question, I will go home and seek out the biblical answer and bring it back”. This practice has been maintained since that time.
One Wednesday during bible study Sister Daniel and others inquired “Why can’t we have worship service”? Since there was no adequate answer, after discussing it with everyone Pastor Braxton made his way back to the leasing office, seeking a day and time that would work for everyone. He learned immediately that Sunday morning was out of the question. Some attendees went to their home churches while others were not able to travel out as easily. Pastor Braxton quickly learned that the main reason why Sunday was not an option was because the residents already had the room reserved for Ravens Tailgating events. Pastor was not about to stand in the way of them and their tailgating, so it was decided that every other Saturday at 10:00 am would be our day of worship.
There are no pretensions here at New Life. We all are servants! First Lady Braxton stands in as our usher and Sister Cornelia Askew as our church clerk. Sister Shantee’ Chester, whom the Lord took home to glory in 2015, organized our bible study and choir materials. Since then Sister Washington makes certain that bible study folders are made and she keeps Pastor Braxton straight on Wednesday’s.
Our first service was held on January 10, 2015. (Pastor Braxton always gives homework, so the first person to tell him what the subject of his first sermon was will receive a special prize.) God has been faithful to New Life and we have obtained much by His grace and mercy. We have received many generous donations. We ‘borrowed’ our sound system one Saturday, and just like that, Deacon Avery Yancey donated it to New Life and became ours. God is indeed good. Most recently God moved on the hearts of many who loved our mission, to assist our church in acquiring brand new Scofield Study Bibles for our bible study students. This work could not go forward without the dedication and faithfulness of each and every member. We are blessed to count among our congregation many seasoned brothers and sisters, among them, Bishop Simmons and His wife Evangelist Simmons. We praise God for their willingness to serve God. We remain grateful!
We have a very unique viewpoint regarding membership. If you are present in any service, any time, any day, congratulations, you’re now a member of New Life Church.
As we move forward with the aid of the Holy Spirit, please pray for us as we seek to please our God and enlarge His Kingdom, and when He returns, may we be found engrossed in His work so that when we stand before Him, we might hear Him say . . . ”Well done, thy good and faithful servant; thou have been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord!
To whom Much Is Given, Much Is Required!
